The Cyber Security Report 2023, published by Hornetsecurity has revealed that 40.5% of work emails are unwanted.
Phishing remains the most common style of email attack, representing 39.6% of all detected threats, with the following file types being used most frequently to deliver payloads,
- Archive files (Zip, 7z, etc.)
- HTML files
- DOC(X)
Of note is that social media platforms, such as LinkedIn are being utilised to gather information for social engineering.
So what can you do?
- Look out for words in emails, like, ‘urgent’, invoice, confidential etc.
- Check the email address against the domain it purports to come from
- Read before clicking anything, spelling and grammatical errors are common.
- Look out for attachments and links!
