Reading the latest Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) today there do appear to be some shifts in trends. The headlines are quite illuminating and include:
86% of breaches were financially motivated (no surprises there then)
37% of breaches stole or used credentials
22% of breaches involved Phishing (that figure appears to have come down)
72% of breaches involved large businesses
28% of breaches involved small businesses
One thing that screams out from the report is that human error continues to be the most prolific reason for data breaches. Human error can cover a multitude of sins, from clicking on a link, allowing a social engineer access to a building, a misconfigured system or hooking up to insecure WiFi.
