AI Supercharges Social Engineering

Financial institutions are increasingly being targeted by malware-free intrusions, with 81% of interactive cyber attacks over the past year bypassing traditional malware detection methods. The financial services sector has seen a 26% increase in such attacks, driven not only by cyber criminals but also by a significant 80% year-on-year rise in nation-state actor activity.

These attackers focus on exploiting human vulnerability using generative AI to craft highly convincing phishing emails, texts, and communications, which dramatically increase click rates and the effectiveness of social engineering tactics.

Identity is now seen as the new security perimeter, requiring businesses to shift their focus from just endpoint protection to robust detection, response, and prevention capabilities around user identities and their cloud environments. Modern defences demand that firms adopt AI-powered security tools to match and outpace attackers, helping to prevent breaches and mitigate the risks of human error.

The main message for advice firms and regulated businesses is to secure identities with advanced controls, continuously monitor for threats, and leverage AI-driven defences to stay ahead in the evolving threat landscape.

Organised Crime

Small Towns, Big Cartels: £42m Cocaine Plot Foiled on Yorkshire Coast

A Colombian drug trafficker, Didier Tordecilla Reyes, was sentenced to 13.5 years following the interception of 524 kilos of high-purity cocaine, worth £42 million, landed on Easington beach, East Yorkshire.

Reyes had flown in from Colombia via Spain to supervise the operation, working directly with cartels and two Scottish accomplices, Mark Moran and Daniel Livingstone, who received sentences of 15 years and 7 years 9 months, respectively.

The NCA, supported by Humberside Police and Border Force, surveilled, intervened, and arrested the gang before the drugs could enter UK circulation, drawing judicial praise for the operation.

This case highlights the international scale and reach of organised crime, demonstrating how rural and coastal UK communities are targeted for large-scale Class A drug importation and the importance of vigilance and partnership among enforcement agencies to disrupt these threats

Comment – This incident highlights how small towns and secluded locations are prime locations for drug smuggling.

Art Dealers Face Record Fines as UK Tightens AML Enforcement

HMRC has dramatically increased penalties for non-compliance in the UK art market, with DYS44 Art Gallery Limited receiving a record £158,679 fine for broad procedural failures, from inadequate risk assessments to poor record-keeping and staff training.

The latest figures show enforcement is accelerating, with more than 80 penalties issued in just six months, compared to 61 in 20 months previously, and average fines rising above £6,900. While most sanctions still relate to overdue registrations, an increasing number target breaches such as failing to report business changes or maintain proper customer due diligence.

Regulators are scrutinising not only registration but also ongoing operations, demanding frequent compliance checks and refresher due diligence, with the expectation that evidence is updated every three months or more often for higher-risk customers. The shift highlights HMRC’s move from bringing businesses into the regulated perimeter to actively testing their AML risk management, sending a clear message: robust controls and not just paperwork are necessary to avoid hefty fines and ensure market integrity
